Why did Zhongtong's hydrogen fuel buses take the lead?

In cities like Datong, Zhuhai, Shenzhen, Foshan, Suzhou, Jinan, Liaocheng, and Weifang, you can now see the presence of Zhongtong hydrogen fuel vehicles, whether in public buses or logistics distribution. In 2018, Zhongtong Bus produced 790 fuel cell vehicles (including logistics vehicles), accounting for 49% of the total industry output, ranking first. After entering 2019, with clearer policies and the continuous maturity of products, technology, and market foundations, the "circle of friends" for Zhongtong hydrogen fuel vehicles continues to expand.

Now, the development trend of hydrogen fuel vehicles has become increasingly evident, with countless enterprises and capital entering the hydrogen energy industry chain. In this increasingly fierce industrial competition landscape, how did Zhongtong Bus achieve the industry's "top spot"? What strategies and plans do they have in response to future opportunities and challenges?
"Accumulating strength and emerging" and "NO.1"
In December 2018, 40 Zhongtong 10.5-meter hydrogen fuel buses were delivered to Datong, Shanxi. Currently, this batch of hydrogen fuel buses has been put into operation on the Datong bus routes 62 and 201. During operation, these vehicles have received high recognition from users in terms of range, low-temperature start, operational reliability, and riding comfort. This is the first large-scale market application case of Zhongtong hydrogen fuel buses, marking a successful start.
In March 2019, 30 Zhongtong 9-meter hydrogen fuel buses were delivered to Weifang and put into operation. This batch of hydrogen fuel buses is designed with a range of 350 km and is assigned to the Weifang bus routes 55 and 65. These two routes pass through the city government, train station, bus station, and government service center, making them some of the busiest routes in Weifang. Now, after more than a month of operation, the vehicles have successfully completed their transport tasks every day and received unanimous recognition from users.

Reliable products and market recognition are also reflected in the data. In 2018, the production of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in China was 1,619 units. Among them, Zhongtong Bus produced 790 fuel cell vehicles (including logistics vehicles) in 2018, accounting for 49% of the total industry output, ranking first in the industry. Achieving the NO.1 position was not an overnight success; it is inseparable from Zhongtong Bus's long-standing "accumulating strength and emerging" in the hydrogen fuel field.
In line with the development in the new energy bus sector, Zhongtong Bus is also one of the earliest companies to layout the hydrogen fuel bus industry. In 2014, Zhongtong Bus officially began the research and development of hydrogen fuel cell buses. By the end of 2016, Zhongtong Bus successfully launched the first 9-meter hydrogen fuel cell bus in China. In 2017, they launched the 9-meter passenger version hydrogen fuel cell bus and the 12-meter hydrogen fuel city bus. Since then, the development pace of Zhongtong hydrogen fuel buses has gradually accelerated. As of now, Zhongtong Bus has formed a full range of hydrogen fuel bus products covering passenger transport, public transport, high-end business, and logistics, achieving full coverage of 9-12 meter bus product types.
Zhongtong 10.5-meter hydrogen fuel bus orders
Products are the external manifestation of research and technology accumulation. Now, Zhongtong Bus has established a dedicated research and development team for fuel cell products, conducting in-depth research and testing in areas such as fuel cell system design, fuel cell thermal management control, hydrogen system design, fuel cell system calibration and testing, vehicle control, and vehicle matching and simulation. At the same time, Zhongtong Bus has a professional fuel cell laboratory and a vehicle hub platform for professional evaluation and testing of fuel cell systems and vehicles. At the end of March, as an important part of Zhongtong Bus's testing center, this laboratory was accredited by the "China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS)", further enhancing the authority of the platform verification data.
With the successful operation in Datong and Weifang, 2019 has ushered in a new round of development for Zhongtong hydrogen fuel vehicles. Now, based on the market order information obtained, regions such as Jinan, Suzhou, Foshan, Shenzhen, and Liaocheng will join Zhongtong hydrogen fuel vehicles' "circle of friends", and Zhongtong Bus is continuously solidifying its position in the hydrogen fuel vehicle field.
"Self-reliance" and "leveraging opportunities"
At the 2018 National Two Sessions, Li Shupeng, a representative of the National People's Congress and chairman of Zhongtong Bus, proposed a proposal titled "Suggestions on Accelerating the Construction of Hydrogen Refueling Stations". At the 2019 National Two Sessions, Li Shupeng submitted another proposal titled "Suggestions on Accelerating the Promotion of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles".
As a proposer of the proposals, Zhongtong Bus has also been taking action. In addition to the efforts mentioned above in product, technology, and market promotion, in April 2018, Zhongtong Bus invested in the construction of the first hydrogen refueling station in Shandong Province in Liaocheng. The first phase of this hydrogen refueling station is designed to have a flow rate of 200 kg/12h, which can meet the daily needs of 20 hydrogen fuel cell buses. The second phase is currently under construction, and once completed, it will increase the refueling rate by 60%, accommodating more hydrogen fuel cell buses.

In March 2019, hydrogen energy was first included in the government work report, proposing to "promote the construction of charging and hydrogen refueling facilities". In the same month, the Ministry of Finance issued a notice clearly supporting the development of hydrogen refueling infrastructure. In April, the State Council issued a document to implement the division of responsibilities for key work departments mentioned in the "Government Work Report". It specifically stated: "We will continue to implement preferential policies for the purchase of new energy vehicles and promote the construction of charging and hydrogen refueling facilities," and suggested that the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, and National Energy Administration be responsible for this matter according to their respective duties.
The further clarification of policies has strengthened Zhongtong Bus's determination to deepen its efforts in the hydrogen fuel field. Development requires "self-reliance" and also "leveraging opportunities". Zhongtong Bus has always been keenly aware of new opportunities for industrial development.
In August 2018, Shandong Heavy Industry Group started the construction of a globally leading hydrogen energy vehicle industrial base in Jinan with a total investment of 50 billion yuan, and signed a hydrogen energy city demonstration project agreement with Jinan City to help Jinan build a hydrogen energy city. Zhongtong Bus became one of the main technology research and development and product manufacturing enterprises.
In January 2019, Zhongtong hydrogen fuel buses made their debut at the founding conference of the Shandong Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cell Industry Alliance.
In January 2019, Shandong Province seized the opportunity to develop the domestic hydrogen energy industry and established the Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cell Industry Alliance. Zhongtong Bus is a major member of the industry alliance, and three of its hydrogen fuel cell buses were invited to participate in the on-site display at the founding conference. In the future development of the hydrogen energy industry in Shandong, Zhongtong Bus will become one of the important carriers.
